I hate to be the one to break it to you. America likes it easy. Heck, who knows, you might too. The notion is easy enough to get caught up in. Please don’t take this the wrong way, I do love my country. But as a culture, the American culture prefers things to be easy.
Last year I was playing Nintendo Wii and they released this emulator that lets you play all of these old games. I found Super Mario 2, old school game! Or so I thought. You might even think you played it. 99% chance that you havent. It was never released in this country. Nope, it wasnt. You can google it yourself. Actually, here. Here is the wiki link you will see that Super Mario Brothers 2 that we had here, was actually Super Mario All Stars. And Super Mario 2 was released in Japan, a completely different game. Here it has been released in an emulated version as “The Lost Levels”
Why am I talking about video games in a fitness blog? I’m getting there. Just hang tight with me.
Watch this video its for a Japanese game show about these challenges. Literally, they have hundreds of people compete in these obstacle courses, and if someone completes it, they change it up and make it harder. People barely EVER win.
Again, whats the point?
America- We have no child left behind, everyone wants to be winners, we lower the bar so that everyone can get that good feeling. Super Mario Brothers 2 was not brought out because it was deemed too hard and wouldnt be enjoyed. We’ve lost our fighting spirit. We’ve lost our winning instinct. Our teeth have been ground down and we are no more dangerous that a declawed overweight cat that just sits around all day.
Actually… lets see, overweight men with vasectomies? Yep, pretty close!
So… is there a cure? Or are we doomed to shed these large sacks of skin and go extinct without so much as a shout. Will we go down with a whisper and heavy breathing, unable to even run from the evil that chases us down?
The secret is to Bring It. Ok, or in simpler terms. Do something difficult. If you keep taking the easy way, you will get more and more accustomed to that, your spirit will suffer. I dont for one second believe that we are on this earth to have everything handed to us easily. We don’t grow through easy things, we dont become greater the easier we have it.
You grow muscle as you tear it, you build yourself up as you accomplish difficult things, you become great taking the road less traveled.
I’ve got great news. P90X is one of those roads. It’s one of those hard things that if you get through it, you’re going to be a better person, just because you completed it. It’s one of those things that you can say “I did this” and it’s going to give you confidence to do the next hard thing, and then the next. Before you know it, you’re used to doing the hard things and you’re looking for the next challenge.
You can be whoever you want to be. If you want to be someone who takes the easy road, have at it. It’s your life to do what you want to with. I myself want to be someone I respect. There are things I admire in other people and I want to emulate those things, I want to make them part of me. What do you want to make part of you?
