Beachbody, the makers of incredible workout programs like P90X, Insanity, Turbo Fire, and a whole host of others, along with incredible nutritional supplements, offers a program called the coach program. It is a home based fitness business, with a network or relationship marketing business model. In relationship marketing you are a independent rep for the company, paid commission on what you sell, along with achieving different bonuses for building your business. It is a business model that a lot of companies use, such as Mary Kay, Pampered Chef, and a host of others. 
One of the ways you build a relationship marketing business is by building your organizational structure. Meaning you find other people who are interested in the business, and they become part of your downline, in this there will be a right leg, and a left leg, and as you add people on and they add people on, it looks like a pyramid.
There have been and are genuine pyramid schemes that have existed and do exist. In an actual pyramid scheme, no product is sold, it is just the promise of money. Wikipedia has a great article on what pyramid schemes are. You can have a look at it here.
Every organization has a structure. There is a president, or ceo, you have vice presidents under them, managers under them, regional managers, workers, and so on. But you don’t look at P&G and question if they are a pyramid scheme, and in the same way, the vice president gets paid off what the people are under him produce.
Beachbody has been around for a long time, spends hundreds of million dollars a year on marketing quality products, and has a great reputation, along with a great better business bureau rating.
The answer is, no, the coach opportunity is not a scam or pyramid scheme. It is a viable business opportunity for a lot of people. It is a great home business to be in and the business model works really well for Beachbody because the coaches are able to help their customers with the products. Lets say P90X for example. I have done P90X, along with a lot of other Beachbody workouts, I am able to help my customers with the workouts, answer questions, give advice, help motivate. The relationship marketing method just simply works great for both Beachbody and their customers. It is basically giving each customer their very own and personal coach for fitness.
